College Football Awards

Sports news flies so fast and furiously that it may be hard for even the most devoted sports fan to keep up with all the news. Fortunately, College News has complied a list of stories that are worth your attention. Check them out here:
On the heels of Saturday’s Heisman Trophy winner announcement, ESPN will be hosting their own college football awards. Who is projected to come out big? Why, the ESPN blog just happens to have a list of the nominees over at their blog. Listing reasons as to why each player nominated should win, the blog post nonetheless comes to a conclusion as to who the ultimate winner will be. Check it out here.
Speaking of college football, the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee recently passed a bill aimed at forcing a playoff system on the BCS. The bill would effectively ban the group from referring to its title game as a “championship” game unless it were the result of a playoff system–something that a rabid number of college football fans have been clamoring for a long time.
The bill’s sponsor, Republican representative Joe Barton, condemned the Bowl Championship Series by saying that “it is not about choosing the champion or competition on the gridiron. It is about revenue sharing for the schools that are in the BCS conferences .”
The bill was passed by a voice vote. Read more here.

The Voice of the Packers has told us more than once on Wisconsin’s Morning News that it’s not so much who a team has to play, but more a case of when you face them.
His sage words ring in my mind as I think back to the 2007 NFL season when the Packers played the Giants very early in the campaign at the Meadowlands. New York was a mess heading into the week two clash, having given up 45 points to the Cowboys in a season-opening loss. Green Bay would spank the Giants 35-13, scoring 21 unanswered points to leave New York 0-2 amid all sorts of Big Apple talk about firing a coach who apparently hadn’t gotten his team to buy into his system.
The Giants would crack off six straight wins after that, go 10-6 to nail down a wild card berth and, well, good Packers fans know the rest. The G-Men would beat Green Bay in the NFC title game and go on to win the Super Bowl, becoming just the fifth wild card to go all the way. New York beat the Packers, Cowboys and Patriots in the playoffs after losing to all three during the regular season.
As Mr. Larrivee so wisely advises, it’s not who you play, it’s when you play them.
The Packers found themselves in similar straights eight games into this season, with the low ebb coming with a loss to winless Tampa Bay. The team sat at 4-4 with all manor of fan, pundit and talk show host calling for blood.
What a difference four straight victories make.
Green Bay is 8-4 with a very legitimate shot at a wild card berth. Wins over faltering Dallas, once-hot San Francisco, Detroit and sputtering Baltimore revived postseason hopes and improved the IQ’s of Coach Mike McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson immensely, judging from the lack of beefing I hear on sportstalk radio.
The Packers are now one of those teams the other guys don’t want to play. The offensive line actually played a few games together, bolstered by the return of Mark Tauscher. The defense apparently doesn’t have to consult the owners manual that comes with a new 3-4 scheme before choosing plays. Special teams are…special, or at least, not sucking. Aaron Rodgers is getting rid of the ball faster amid game plans that have him making shorter drops/quicker decisions.
The Bears have nothing to play for Sunday, but any game against the Packers is Chicago’s version of a Super Bowl especially if the Monsters can put a dent in Green Bay’s playoff hopes. Next up is a Steelers team that’s lost four in a row but could still be in the postseason chase. Moribund Seattle closes out the Lambeau slate with the regular season finale at Arizona which should have it’s playoff plans nailed down. These were once-daunting challenges that now seem to be, well, winnable for a team like Green Bay that is on a roll.
It’s not who you play. It’s when you play them.
Thanks Wayne. If the NFL had currency, your words should be etched on each of it’s coins.
