If you’re planning a European vacation and you also happen to be a golf enthusiast, then Mallorca, Spain should be on your itinerary is an absolute “must do.” Festive night life, year-round sunshine and great shopping aside, Mallorca has made a name for itself in the tourism industry as a “paradise for golf enthusiasts.” So just what is it about Mallorca that makes it the perfect European golf vacation?

Alcudia, Mallorca is home to Pula, one of the world’s finest golf resorts. Founded in 1995, Pula has become an internationally acclaimed golf course. Thanks to a world-class upgrade which began in 2005, Pula is now ranked number one in Alcudia out of 14 golf courses, boasting the longest and most demanding links and a par 70. Nestled at the foot of a majestic mountain range, golfers of all skill levels will get a thrill out of playing the scenic course at Pula. Pula also features a stunning driving range and two putting greens for golfers who want to fine tune their skills at one of the world’s most astounding golf courses.

The upgrades that were made in 2005 were undertaken in part to bring Pula up to professional golf standards and now Pula has been put on the map for one more reason: the Mallorca Classic. The last of the European PGA tour stops on the circuit before the Volvo Masters, The Mallorca Classic draws the best PGA players from Europe every October. In fact, the Mallorca Classic at Pula is the last chance for PGA players to make the top 115 on the Order of Merit and hold onto their spot for the next season’s tour.

The 2007 Mallorca classic wrapped up in October and those who were lucky enough to hold a ticket were able to see Gregory Bourdy of France win his first Mallorca Classic title. It appeared as though Robert-Jan Derksen of the Netherlands would edge Bourdy out the few days. Perhaps the fact that play was suspended for several days in a row due to uncharacteristically inclement weather threw Derksen’s game off. Bourdy managed to slip ahead for a 3-under par win, becoming the 18th first time winner on the tour and setting a new record for the European PGA for the most maiden tournament winners in a single season.

Bourdy’s maiden win at the Mallorca Classic in October only served to boost the image of Pula even more. Golfers from Europe and elsewhere can count themselves in an elitist class when they make a round at Pula a part of their vacation itinerary. While in Mallorca, tourists would also do well to take in as many of the other thirteen local golf resorts as they can, too. Although many of them have not had the exposure of Pula, they are still well worth including in a European golf vacation.

Golf aside; there are many other reasons to visit Mallorca. Mallorca is rich with cultural heritage, rife with top-notch night clubs and restaurants and has plenty of family-oriented destinations for those who are traveling with kids. However, for the avid golfer, nothing could make a European vacation finer than playing the links at the world-renowned Pula Club.

Tiger Woods seems to have the perfect lifestyle. A drop dead gorgeous Swedish supermodel wife, an enormous mansion, fame, money, on Forbes list of celebrities, an adorable daughter, close friends with Charles Barkley, thirteen major championships under his belt, and his very own video game. Tiger Woods 2008 is the next iteration in the fairly long series of Tiger Woods video games. If you are an avid fan of the Tiger Wood games, you will feel very much at home with the latest installment. Electronic Arts have been notorious for making arcade Tiger Woods golf video games to appeal to the casual gamers, but his year seems different. Unrealistic scores (like 50 under par) are virtually impossible to achieve this time around. The gameplay is similar to the previous games in that it keeps the player immersed in the golf course. One new feature is a revamped putting system which allows you to anticipate the line of trajectory that your golf ball will travel on the green. Even though it is not as useful as Tiger Vision, (which was introduced in Tiger Woods 2005) it still helps to line up the putt. There is a limit to how many times you can utilize this feature, so players should not expect to abuse other players with their putting. Your skill level and difficulty will determine how many times you can use the putt preview. Another element of the game that might turn a few players off is the golf swing mechanic. The analog sticks are no longer used to hit the golf ball; however, the buttons are used. This alteration may have been because of the lack of challenge with hitting the golf ball with the analog stick. The new way to make contact with the ball is to press the button three times (ala Madden kicking field goals). Once to start your swing, twice to start your downswing, and a third time for accuracy. If it seems too intricate, it really is fairly intuitive. Madden fans can easily make a smooth transition with this gameplay mechanic. Photo face is yet another new feature of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008. It gives gamers the opportunity to generate their own face and put it in the game. This feature appears to be exclusive to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Electronics Arts has not corroborated a Photo face feature for the Nintendo Wii. Sorry Nintendo Wii owners. It sucks to be you; if you bought a Nintendo Wii, you do not have much of a live to begin with. The create a golfer aspect is back, and it has the usual things you would expect. You can create a golfer as skeleton-like as Nicole Richie, or as putrid as Rosie O’Donnell. It is all up to the gamer. All of the mini-games remain intact in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008. The visuals in the game are brilliant. Everything from the beautiful golf courses to Tiger Woods? millions dollar smile will appease anyone. Shot Confidence is another original aspect of the game. In a nutshell, playing well gives you confidence. Playing poorly lowers your confidence. Many will be dissatisfied with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008, but other will be elated. Overall, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008 is a solid improvement over Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007.

For the second consecutive year the Island of Bermuda will host one of the most exclusive golf tournaments since it receives the winners of the sport?s four major tournaments: Masters, U.S. Open, PGA Championship and the British Open. The best golf players of the world will face each other in the PGA Grand Slam final, a 36 whole stroke play event with a 1.35 million price.

The tournament that began in 1979 has been hosted in New York, Minnesota, Florida, Illinois, California and finally Hawaii where it has stayed for the past 12 years before moving outside the US to Mid Ocean Club in the Island of Bermuda last year.

Since sports play an integral role in the country?s development, the Island of Bermuda’s golfers and its business community, mostly known for being a dream destination, are obviously motivated about the PGA Grand Slam of Golf’s to be hosted in their country in 2008. Nevertheless the selection is definitely not casual; the Mid Ocean Club in Bermudas has been ranked in the #45 position by Golf Digest for courses outside the United States and last year Grand Slam was more than successful.

The tournament is considered as one of the most important in golf and it is televised to a worldwide audience (100 countries) by TNT and Golf Channel, which means an economic shot for the host country. Actually, this year winner (Angel Cabrera) received $600,000 while second, third and fourth places got $300,000, $250,000, $200,000 respectively. However, the prize money did not counted towards the PGA Tour money list.

Getting a spot in the Grand Slam is not an easy task. The field is typically reserved to the year’s four major champions. Past winners include: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Tom Lehman, Ben Crenshaw, Greg Norman, Nick Price and Ian Woosnam.

The famous Tiger Woods, seven times winner of the Grand Slam was absent of this year tournament due to the recent birth of his daughter. Even thought, the event attracted around 7,000 golf fans. Hopefully, we all will be able to see the golf star next year at Mid Ocean Club. However, Bermudas is now set as a world class golf destination, and the dream of growing through the sport seems to turn into reality for the Island.

Once again, the biannual Ryder Cup tournament is set to send shivers down the spines of many golf aficionados in both Europe and the United States. The 37th Ryder Cup will take place from 19th to 21st September, with top golf professionals from both continents battling it out in one of the last great sporting events founded on prestige rather than prizes.

With the European Tour golfers having won three consecutive (and five of the last six) Ryder Cups, the US PGA team wants to make sure that it takes full advantage of its home turf. This year’s Ryder Cup will be hosted at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, which previously hosted the Senior PGA Championship in May 2004 and the PGA Club Professional Championship in June 2002. Outside of tournaments, it generally serves as a private golf club, and was designed by professional golfer Jack Nicklaus.

US Team Captain Paul Azinger intends to give his team another slight advantage, announcing a change to alternate shot format, citing past performance of the US team when playing under this format. For the first time in nine years, the opening matches of the Ryder Cup will feature this format, which over the last three matches was replaced with what is known as Four Ball Better-Ball. Azinger has also revamped the method of team selection, using the amount of prize money earned by a golfer in order to determine the top eight golfers, and then manually picking golfers nine to twelve.

As for the European team, three time masters winner Nick Faldo is the team captain, and believes that playing on US courses may be to his advantage too. After all, Faldo won Augusta in 1989, 1990 and 1996, and even does commentary for US based ESPN and ABC television networks. The European team will be selected via two qualifying measurements, the World Ranking Points List and the European Tour List.

Regardless of who wins, the 2008 Ryder Cup is expected to be one of the highlights of the sporting year, with millions of viewers in several markets.
