Thinking further on my recent article about Tiger Woods apparently using an unorthodox form of anger management, to help him release bad shots, got me thinking. The way we learn anything useful in life tends to be on the basis of trial and error. We try something new and it works, we learn from it. We try something new and it doesn’t work, we learn from that too – possibly even more,

Milton Erickson, the father of modern hypnotherapy, often used the story of how he learned to walk again, at the age of 18 after severe bout of Polio, by watching his baby sister learning to walk.

?Professional coaching is an ongoing professional relationship, that helps people produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses or organisations. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performance and enhance their quality of life?????????.. Coaching accelerates the clients progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choice? International Coach Federation. www.coachfederation.org/abouticf/standards.htm

Effective coaching helps coachees in many ways, here are a few:

Unlock a person?s true potential through helping to raise their self awareness through enquiry, Find different perspectives to situation Build a ?can do? attitude? Give the coachee specific time to focus solely on themselves Increase an individual productivity Ignites their passion Clarity about life purpose and goals

Research conducted by Manchester Consulting in 2001, found that there was a direct link between coaching and mentoring to bottom business results!!! 22% in profits over the term of their project!!

?My tax partners know that in teaching tax technical skills they can instruct using the I will tell / show you technique, or they can use the ?Here is a problem ? what do you think is the solution?? approach. The former may be more time efficient, the latter may lead to deeper understanding? Bridget Allen, Head of Coaching KPMG

Did you realise from the quote about, that KPMG has a ?Head of Coaching?? What does that tell you about the importance of coaching to businesses?

Do you have a personal coach either at work or externally? If yes, great!! If not, what is holding you back?

Don?t you want to accelerate your career or business, have greater self awareness, improve your business relationships and increase your performance/ productivity / profits?

I have been providing business mentoring and coaching services for years now and I also have a business coach and my coach Terri Levine http://www.levinebusinesscoaching.com/about has coaches for her different areas of focus!!! Tiger Woods even has a coach and he is the best in the world!!!

People ask ?Why does Tiger have a coach?? Do you know the answer? The answer is because he cannot see himself!!!!

For us to become the ?Tigers? in our businesses, organisations and in our lives, we need help from experienced people to help us ?see ourselves? and to help us to grow.

Improving your game of golf in today’s technology-driven world is more than possible. Innovative 3D Doppler radar tracking now allows us to examine each and every one of our shots individually and to compare them with predetermined optimum ranges based on the club and ball speed.

Use your legs and get into the rhythm

It is not only technology, however, that can slice the shots taken to reach the green by a hefty margin. It is also the simple things like making optimum use of your legs and body when swinging the club, and not relying totally on the wrists.

Your golf swing can also improve immeasurably if you concentrate on your balance and get into a groove, or rhythm, with your swing. Slow down and feel the tempo and you will be amazed at how far you can hit the ball when you relax into the shot.

3D Doppler Tracking benefits

3D Doppler tracking is, without a doubt, the most accurate form of 3D ball tracking. It collates precise data, rendering extensive information about each shot. Ball speed, face impact position, angle of launch, club speed, flight speed and distance carried are all variables taken into account.

Optimise your launch conditions

There are 3 main variables, which together can help you optimise your launch condition, thereby hitting the ball that much further. These are:-

? Ball speed – how fast the ball is travelling. The faster the ball, the greater the distance. It is imperative, however, to optimise the spin rate and launch angle as well to get the full benefit.
?

Tiger Woods is set to be punished with a fine by the PGA Tour for his public criticism of a rules official on Sunday.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the tour does not publicize fines.

Woods went on to win his seventh Bridgestone Invitational title after Harrington posted a treble-bogey eight at the hole during the final round of Golf Betting at Firestone Country Club.

Woods was bothered after his four-shot victory Sunday because he and Padraig Harrington were put on the clock at the par-5 16th. He said that caused Harrington to rush three difficult shots, leading to triple bogey.

European Tour chief referee John Paramor told Woods and Harrington they were being timed.

Woods said he told Harrington after it was over, ?I?m sorry that John got in the way of a great battle.?

Speaking to Sportsbook golf.com an unnamed PGA official confirmed that Woods would face a fine for his comments.

The PGA Tour’s player handbook says: “It is an obligation of membership to refrain from comments to the news media that unreasonably attack or disparage tournaments, sponsors, fellow members, players of PGA Tour.”

Harrington conceded he was rushed, although he said it would be unfair to give the final group preferential treatment.

Section VI-D in the PGA Tour’s player handbook says, “It is an obligation of membership to refrain from comments to the news media that unreasonably attack or disparage tournaments, sponsors, fellow members, players, or PGA Tour.”

Ben Hogan scoffed at the idea. Jack Nicklaus spurned it. Gary player scorned it. Among the game’s most respected legends, they disdained the idea of using a sports psychologist or a mental coach to help them win. Instead, these players preferred to retain the stubborn independence that drove them to succeed. They provided their own mental golf tips. They didn’t need a sports psychologist or mental coach. For a long time, this approach dominated on the Tour.

Then Tiger Woods burst onto the scene. He won time and time again. In fact, he won so much that other players began to ask how. Eventually, they realized what made Tiger win. It was his attitude. He thought he was supposed to win every time he played. And therefore he won. This realization transformed things radically. Now more of golf’s top pros work with mental coaches who provide a different kind of golf instruction session.

An Avalanche Of Change
Tiger’s rise to the top brought an avalanche of change. As Davis Love III points out, Tiger taught professionals that the winning edge in the pro game was mental, not physical. Tiger gets to a better mental place more consistently than the rest of the players, who get to it only occasionally. That’s why he wins. Tiger’s approach also taught the pros that the mental realm is where the greatest improvement can be made more rapidly.

While Tiger’s success was the driving force behind the change, the tipping point may have been Ernie Els’ victory in the British Open in 2002. Helped by Jos Vanstiphout, Els cruised to victory at Muirfield, St. Andrews. That spurred changes. Today, more and more sports psychologists are advising golfers about golf’s mental side. They’re also writing books about it. One noteworthy book is Tim Gallwey’s The Inner Game of Golf, fashioned after his breakthrough book, The Inner Game of Tennis.

In addition, more and more researchers are studying the game’s mental side. Some are using the latest technological advances to do it. Dr. Deborah Graham, a sports psychologist, has clients practice with a special monitor. It measures factors like heart rate and tension. The readings determine the player’s optimum performance rate. Meanwhile, Dr. Debbie Crews, a researcher at Arizona State, has found that the best predictor of successful performance is brain function milliseconds before and at impact.

Still A Ways To Go
Despite these advances, research in to the mental approach has a ways to go. So does the players’ regard for it as a legitimate weapon on tour. At a recent World Scientific Congress of Golf, a poll revealed that while elite players believe that mental skills are 50 percent of the game, the majority say they spend less than 10 percent of their practice time on them.

The research on the game’s mental side, however, has produced two key golf tips for the weekend golfer. First, before the mental skills can make a difference, a player must develop swing and course management skills. Knowing how and where to make shots is a must. Having learned this, golfers can then take their game to the next level by focusing on its mental aspects.

Second, the most successful golfers play not for glory or even to win, but for the challenge and satisfaction gained from the improvement process. It’s what Gio Valiante, a sports psychologist from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL, calls the Mastery Approach.

According to this theory, elite golfers, like Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, are more concerned with learning and improving than winning. This drive for mastery gets then fully involved in the shot at hand. They don’t worry about who they’re playing, how much money they’ll win, or what people will say if they lose. It’s how they attain superior focus, concentration, and achievement.

The formula for improving your game is clear. Work first on developing your swing skills and course management skills through golf lessons, practice sessions, golf tips, and/or playing a lot. Once proficient at them, work on the game’s mental side. Combining both will not only boost your game to the next level, it will also help you whittle down your golf handicap.

They’ve taken to calling Tiger Woods the “chosen one” and why not? At the relatively young age of 29, he has already put together a resume that can be compared favorably with the all-time greats of the sport . In 2005, he captured his 10th major golf championship, a total that puts him fourth in history in most championships won behind Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen. And to think that he has probably not even reached the half-way point of his golf career.

Among today’s crop of golf professionals, Woods is the only one to rank among the list of top 20 major championship winners of all time, a strong indicator of his dominance in today’s game. Culturally, Woods is credited with creating renewed interest and participation in golf, not only in the United States but worldwide.

So far, his life has unfolded like a fairy-tale movie. Why, even if it is only his life before the age of 20 that you consider, the movie would already be pretty good.

Consider the following.

Born on December 30, 1975, Eldrick “Tiger” Woods’ early beginnings are well-chronicled by now. At just four months old, Woods guested on the Mike Douglas TV show to display his golf skills and his surprisingly natural golf swing. In 1984, he won his first world championship?the 9-10 Boys Event of the Junior World Golf Championships?at the age of eight. He went on to win the Junior World Championships six times, including four consecutive wins from 1988-1991.

Woods continued with his winning ways in the U.S.Junior Amateur Championships, which he won in 1991, 1992, and 1993 and he remains as the event’s youngest-ever winner. He then went on to become the only person to win the U.S. Amateur Championship three straight years. He won his first amateur in 1994 fresh out of high school, thereby also becoming the youngest to ever win the event. Before he reached the age of 20, Woods had won the USGA Championships five times. Many believe that he has already compiled the best ever under-20 career in golf history.

From there, Woods went to Stanford University for two years, won one NCAA individual championship and then left college to pursue his professional golf career. And after that, the rest, as they say, is history.

The world’s No. 1 player missed the cut Friday at the British Open, shooting a 4-over 74 at Turnberry that had him headed back home to Florida on the same day that 59-year-old Tom Watson tied for the 36-hole lead.

It is the first time Woods has missed a cut since the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot, where he was playing for the first time since the death of his father, Earl, in May of that year.

Depending on how you view the numbers, it was either the fifth or sixth missed cut of Woods’ PGA Tour career.

His only true missed cuts before Friday came at the 1997 Canadian Open, the 2005 Byron Nelson Championship, the 2005 Funai Championship and the 2006 U.S. Open.

Tiger Woods holds the PGA Tour record of 142 consecutive cuts made from the 1998 Buick Invitational until the 2005 Nelson. That streak began after the ‘98 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, from which he withdrew when the final round of the event had to be rescheduled for six months later because of weather. While he technically did not miss the cut, the WD is a gray area.

None of that was of any concern to Woods on Friday after he made two double-bogeys on the back nine at Turnberry.

Tiger has failed to capture a golf major title this year and will have only one opportunity after the British Open to win one with the upcoming PGA championship at Hazeltine Golf Club in Minnesota in August.

Tiger Wood’s is without question the best golfer on the planet today. Some think he is the best athlete period. We can debate whether golfers are athletes all day, but this I will agree to, Tiger COULD be the best that his body will allow because he has mastered the single most important element to training. You too can use it to be better at muscle building.

Some people are gym rats. They just love being in the gym. I’m like that. I like the look, smell, sounds and ”feel” of weight rooms. They are a great place to hang out and I can spend hours in them every day. Tiger Wood’s is the same way about golf courses. This, of course, has absolutely NOTHING to do with his success as a golfer. As a matter of fact, he is the best golfer on the planet in spite of this fact.

My favorite people in the gym are the ones who boast of their gym time and the amount of working out they do. Like I said, I like gyms, so I get the vibe. But what I really get is that it has NOTHING to do with muscle building success. Too bad the people bragging of their lengthy gym time don’t.

Notice how as Tiger walks down the fairway he chat’s up his caddy, or says a few words to his playing partner, sometimes even acknowledging people along the fairway? The time spent walking around the course I am sure Tiger enjoys and counts for his “time on the golf course”. A round of golf takes about 4 hours. During that 4 hour time, what is the actual AMOUNT of golf that is Tiger playing? Maybe 30 minutes?

What makes Tiger so good is that when it is time to do what he is on the course to do, nobody is better at bringing the focus and intensity to the moment. He gets as close to 100% efficiency to each golf swing as possible. For the 45 seconds he is holding the club and making the shot his intensity and effort are the highest it can be for him.

If you can do this for each set while you are in the gym you will surpass every goal you have. The ability to take a set of weights and for the 45 seconds that you are doing what you are in the gym to do, if you can bring as close to 100% intensity and effort to that lift, you will be more successful than you can imagine. It is this ability that separates successful muscle builders from unsuccessful ones. Performing 16 sets of low rep high weight training per session at this level is how you build muscle. That’s about 15 minutes of WORK out of ever how long you want to be in the weight room. That’s not a lot of time, so imagine the amount of intensity required.

The next time you or someone you know starts on about marathon killer weight sessions remember this. Tiger Wood’s takes FEWER shots than everybody on the course that’s why he wins. But the shots he takes are BETTER than everyone else’s.
